After graduating from Cambridge, McKellen began his acting career. He joined the Royal Shakespeare Company in 1961 and appeared in a number of productions, including Hamlet, Othello, and Macbeth.
In the early 1970s, McKellen began to appear in films and television shows. He made his film debut in the 1970 film Sunday Bloody Sunday. He has since appeared in many other films, including Gandhi, The Lord of the Rings trilogy, and the X-Men franchise.
