Robert “Bob” Menendez (/mɛˈnɛndɛz/; born January 1, 1954) is an American lawyer and politician serving as the senior United States senator from New Jersey, a seat he has held since 2006. A member of the Democratic Party, he also served in the New Jersey State Senate from 1988 to 2006. He is also the first Cuban-American elected to the United States Senate.
Life
Menendez was born in Havana, Cuba, to Mario Menéndez, a carpenter, and Evangelina Menéndez, a seamstress. His parents emigrated from Cuba to New York City in 1953, and Menendez was born the following year. The family subsequently moved to Union City, New Jersey, where Menendez grew up in an apartment. He also attended Union City High School, where his speech teacher, Gail Harper, helped him develop as a public speaker.
After graduating from high school in 1972, Menendez attended Saint Peter’s College in Jersey City, New Jersey, where he majored in political science. He graduated in 1976 and went on to earn a Juris Doctor degree from Rutgers Law School in Newark, New Jersey, in 1979.
After law school, Menendez worked as a public defender in Union City. He was also elected to the Union City Board of Education in 1974. In 1982, Menendez ran for mayor of Union City, but he was defeated. However, he was elected to the New Jersey State Assembly in 1986.
In the State Senate, Menendez was a leading advocate for education, healthcare, and environmental protection. He also served as the chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee.
In the Senate, Menendez has served on a number of committees, including the Banking, Housing, and Urban Affairs Committee, the Commerce, Science, and Transportation Committee, and the Foreign Relations Committee. He is currently the chairman of the Foreign Relations Committee.
