George Alex Mensah, the commissioner of police, has revealed that he plans to run for office in 2024 as a member of parliament.
He stated that he will run for office in the Ashanti Region’s Bekwai Constituency even though he hasn’t chosen which political party he will represent.
After 31 years of service, he is now officially retiring from the Ghana Police Service.
COP George Alex Mensah declared to Accra-based Angel FM that he will run for election to the House of Representatives to represent the Bekwai Constituency.
“I have been thinking about it. I will run, I will run,” he said.
COP Mensah has held a number of positions within the Ghana Police Service over the course of his career, with his most recent one being Director-General, Technical, just before his retirement.
He rose to prominence after it was claimed that he participated in a scandal involving a tape that was leaked and purported to show conversations about ousting the current Inspector General of Police (IGP).
COP Alex Mensah has testified before the Parliamentary Committee looking into the matter and is currently at the center of the leaked tape plotting the ouster of Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Dr. George Akuffo Dampare.
The Commissioner of Police (COP) said that his entire family has been devoted to the United Party (UP) tradition from which the NPP emerged in response to a series of inquiries from the Member of Parliament for Asunafo South, Eric Opoku, regarding specific remarks made by the Commissioner in the leaked audio tape indicating his affiliation with the NPP.
“Mr. Chairman, my family has been with the UP tradition ever since I was born, and we’ve remained there till now,” he said.
He later added, “I am a sympathizer of the NPP.”
COP Mensah, who recently retired from the Ghana Police Service, claims that he has long wanted to serve in parliament and that the time is now to do so.
