Following their alleged participation in a leaked tape discussing the removal of the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Dr. George Akuffo Dampare, the Ghana Police Service has decided to reverse its earlier decision to suspend three senior officers, namely Commissioner of Police Mr. George Alex Mensah, Superintendents Emmanuel Eric Gyebi, and George Lysander Asare.
These senior officers were initially detained on September 7, 2023, to allow the service’s disciplinary committee to conduct a thorough investigation into their involvement in the scheme to remove IGP Dr. Akuffo Dampare.
They had all been called as witnesses and appeared before the Ad-hoc Committee of Parliament, whose job it was to look into the tape that had been leaked.
However, the Ghana Police Service decided to reverse this choice just a few hours after the suspensions were made public.
The Ghana Police Service’s Director of Public Affairs, ACP Grace Ansah-Akrofi, said in a statement that the decision to reverse the interdictions was made to prevent any potential biases related to the upcoming Parliamentary Committee proceedings and report. The police service’s internal disciplinary processes will continue in the interim.
Different groups have responded differently to this decision; some have expressed relief over the reinstatement of these senior officers, while others have questioned the timing and underlying motives for the change.
It is still unclear how this choice will affect the ongoing inquiry into the tape that was leaked and what it means for the parties involved.
Relatively, according to Superintendent George Asare, Chief Bugri Naabu suggested they use Mallams to assist in the removal of Dr. George Akuffo Dampare.
Burgi Naabu allegedly suggested three Mallams to take on the IGP both physically and spiritually, according to Superintendent George Asare.
Speaking in Accra to the Parliamentary Committee looking into the leaked tape, he claimed that although he opposed seeking spiritual assistance, Chief Bugri Naabu insisted on doing so.
