The current Electoral Commission (EC), headed by Jean Mensa, is a threat to the nation’s democracy, according to Peter Otokunor, a former deputy general secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC).
He claimed that the EC could throw the nation into chaos, according to about four national security reports.
“The very first one was in 2020. A national security report suggested that the threat to our security; the most significant threat to our security was the Electoral Commission,” in response to the 2020 elections and how Jean Mensa’s failure to compile accurate figures was problematic, Otokunor stated on TV XYZ.
He recalled how, in response to a report, the National Security Minister called a meeting with the EC and the various political parties to resolve the dispute between the electoral management body and some resentful political parties.
Peter Otokunor referred to the EC as being tainted by the NPP government in his remarks regarding the NDC’s decision to boycott the Inter-Party Advisory Committee (IPAC) following the results of the 2020 elections.
Because “the government [Nana Addo] has corrupted that institution,” he claimed, the head of the EC “occasionally disregards suggestions from various parties.”
As Ghana prepares for the general elections in 2024, he continued, Jean Mensa lacks credibility, which poses a threat to the security of the nation.
In other news, Alan Kyeremanten, a former minister of trade and industry, has declared his intention to not run for the leadership of the governing NPP.
Mr. Kyeremanten said he made the decision in response to the incidents that occurred during the super delegates elections on August 26, 2023, in a press release issued in Accra today.
In light of the foregoing, I wish to confirm that I am honourably withdrawing from the process that will lead to the Presidential Primaries to be held on the 4th of November 2023. In the next upcoming weeks, I will provide an indication of the role that I will play in politics in Ghana, after consultations with my family and other well-wishers, various stakeholders and interest groups,” the statement said.
