The Food and Drug Authority (FDA) is warning Ghanaians about the recent increase in the use of nitrous oxide, sometimes known as laughing gas, at nightclubs, bars, and other recreational activities. This warning is primarily directed at partygoers.

The Chief Executive Officer of the Authority, Delese Mimi Darko, warned that the misuse of this gas is “very” dangerous and can result in low blood pressure, a heart attack, and anemia in a statement on Tuesday, January 24.

“Abusers of Nitrous Oxide gas are also prone to the risk of suffocating and loss of consciousness,” the statement said.

It was further said that prolonged exposure to this gas, particularly at recreational gatherings, could harm one’s immune system and cause depression, incontinence, and the onset of mental and neurological diseases.

Therefore, the Authority has started working with the appropriate stakeholders to resolve these new safety concerns.

“The FDA strongly admonishes nightclubs, pubs, and party organizers to desist from the inappropriate use of Nitrous Oxide gas in their facilities.”

The public has also been urged to promptly report any abuse of the gas to the Authorities as it expresses commitment to ensure public health safety.
