National Democratic Congress (NDC) 2024 presidential candidate John Mahama revealed that government procurement is known to be a significant source of corruption and theft of public funds.

In a tweet, he stated that the NDC government will establish an independent value-for-money office to examine all government projects and purchases that exceed $5 million or as recommended by Parliament.

“Government procurement is recognised as a major source of corruption and misappropriation of public funds. We will, among other measures, set up an Independent Value for Money office to scrutinise all government procurements/projects above a $5 million threshold or as shall be recommended by Parliament.” Quote from my post flag bearer election speech at the Tamale UDS.

Prior to this, Mahama urged the Parliament and other pertinent bodies to review the parts of the procurement laws that would set aside a certain amount of money for the development of local manufacturing industries.

According to him, local businesses and job creation in general are negatively impacted by the current situation, where bidding and tender systems are based on high capital injection.

The Public Procurement Authority (PPA) was established in Ghana in 2003 by the Public Procurement Act (Act No. 663) as a corporate body in charge of developing rules and regulations in the area.

The PPA is also in charge of training procurement specialists and building a solid public procurement system that fosters trust among businesses.

Ghana is completely overhauling its public procurement system in an effort to improve transparency and lessen the likelihood of corruption.

Meanwhile, former Tema East MP Daniel Nii Kwatei Titus Glover has stated that Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia is the best candidate for the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

He claimed that the vice presidential candidate’s candidacy has the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) in fear.

Dr. Bawumia is the only candidate, in Mr. Glover’s opinion, who can assist the NPP in breaking the eight.
