The New Patriotic Party (NPP) Ashanti Regional Constituency Chairmen claim they are about to choose a viable candidate for the party.
They contend that the contest is primarily about selecting a candidate who can help the NPP win the election next year and not about favoring members of the same tribe.
The Constituency Chairmen reiterated their support for Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia in a statement released yesterday. They claimed that the Vice President enjoys strong backing from the party’s grassroots, and that their decision to cast a sizable vote for him in the Super Delegates on Saturday was in line with that decision.
In a message, Dominic Bosompem, Dean of Constituency Chairmen & Odotobri Constituency Chairman, added that Dr. Bawumia is unquestionably the preferred candidate of the general public.
Issue and have made a definite decision that our grassroots and polling place managers are correct. We are taking advantage of this opportunity to express our support for this call in unanimity, he argued.
Mr. Bosompem further noted; “We will also urge and entreat all the Constituency Chairmen to heed to the call from the grassroots and polling station executives and vote for Dr. Bawumia in their numbers. Because this is the shining moment for us as the Ashanti Region to make history and settle the score in the minds of Ghanaians that the Ashanti NPP delegate does not vote on tribal lines.’
The group believes “one day somehow, it will be the turn of one of ours, and we will all join to push that person. This is not tribalistic. This is objective. One of ours someday will get our push, but for now, it is not our turn. This project is simply making Ashanti Greater in NPP. ”
The group indicated We the Association of Constituency Chairmen acting on the thunderous widespread demand by the grassroots and polling station executives in our various constituencies to vote for their choice in the upcoming Super Delegates Conference, are making this public statement that we are ready to heed to this call from our party people”.
Following the overwhelming support he has received from all levels of the party, especially from the grassroots during his nationwide tour, Dr. Bawumia has been predicted by many to win both the Super Delegates election on Saturday and the general election in November.
Many have attempted to use his tribal heritage against him, but party members, particularly in the Ashanti Region, have categorically rejected these tactics, and the Vice President is on track to win the election, as the Ashanti Chairmen’s statement indicated.
The Vice President has also received support from local members of parliament.
