    According to statistics provided by the Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD), 186 people died in traffic accidents in July 2023.

    The MTTD indicates that during that time, there was a 4.31 percent increase in the number of reports of road crashes made to the police service.

    According to the report, the number of people killed in car accidents rose by 30.07 percent during that time.

    In 2023, there were 1,233 accidents involving 2,099 vehicles, 186 fatalities, and 1328 injuries.

    The number of reported collisions, vehicles involved, fatalities, and injuries rose by 4.31%, 5.42%, 30.07%, and 8.76%, respectively.

    Additionally, from January to July 2023, there were 8,137 reported road traffic collisions.

    13,862 vehicles of all types (private, commercial, motorcycles/cycles, etc.) were involved in these collisions, and there were 10,407 casualties (1,272 fatalities/deaths and 9,135 injuries).

    Throughout the period of January to June 2023, 1,086 people died in traffic accidents.

    In contrast, 1,300 fatalities were reported during the same time period in 2022.

    A decrease in injuries was also mentioned in the report. 7,807 people were hurt in traffic accidents during the studied period of 2023, compared to 8,007 people hurt from January to June of 2022.

    From the 1,356 cases reported in 2022, pedestrian knockdown incidents decreased to 1,205 in 2023. Likewise, from 13,248 in the previous period, there were 11,763 fewer vehicles involved in crashes.

    In other news, the Member of Parliament (MP) for Ablekuma West, Mrs. Ursula Owusu-Ekuful, has asked government to as a matter of urgency see to the construction of sea defence wall at Gbegbesie-Shiabu in Dansoman to protect residents from tidal waves.

    This comes after several citizens in the locality complained about the effect of tidal waves on their families and having uncontrollable effect on their living condition.

    Reacting to the complains after a meeting with Chiefs and Traditional leaders within the constituency, Madam Ursula said several residents in her constituency have been displaced by tidal waves, and urgent action must be taken to save lives.

    In a subsequent interview with this website, she bemoaned the level of destruction tidal waves have caused within communities in her constituency adding that, immediate action is needed to protect the residents of Dansoman from tidal waves and flooding.
