Carlos Ahenkorah, a member of parliament for Tema West, has reaffirmed that he still stands by his actions of stealing ballot box during the speakership election vote counting on January 7, 2021.
As part of plans to stop Alban Bagbin of the NDC from becoming Speaker that day, the legislator fled with a set of ballot papers during a very chaotic Speaker election session.
However, his plans fell through when he was pursued by opponents on the other side. His actions were widely denounced as violent, immature, and undemocratic by the general public and civil society.
Mr. Carlos Ahenkorah revealed his thinking in an interview on the Kumasi-based Oyerepa Breakfast Show.
He recalled his prediction that the New Patriotic Party (NPP) would face significant obstacles in terms of formulating policies if Alban Bagbin had won the elections.
Ahenkorah claimed that his prophecies had come true because the NPP was now facing fierce opposition in the legislature.
He disclosed that many of his party colleagues who had at first criticized his actions had changed their minds.
“A lot of my colleagues did not understand why I snatched the ballots but today they turn to hail me. A lot of them say if they knew that things were going to be so tough in parliament as we experience today, what happened to you would have happened to you. A whole party, NDC parliamentarians mostly oppose our policies in parliament with the support of the Speaker of Parliament. How is that possible?” he said.
The MP revealed that his unwavering devotion, dedication, and loyalty to the NPP were what led him to decide to seize the ballots.
“So what happened there was my dedication and commitment to NPP and my loyalty. Even though I don’t think I’m going to do it again, I don’t regret doing it,” the legislator added.
