Former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has taken a strong lead in the race to lead the New Patriotic Party (NPP) into the 2028 general elections, according to a new survey by Africa Policy Lens (APL).
The survey results, released on November 1, 2025, revealed that 63.8% of NPP delegates across the country prefer Dr. Bawumia as their choice to lead the Party in the 2028 presidential elections.
The study gathered views from 30,681 delegates across all 16 Regions of Ghana.
Hon. Kennedy Agyapong came second with 28.9%, while other candidates such as Dr. Bryan Acheampong (4.6%), Yaw Osei Adutwum (1.5%), and Kwabena Agyapong (1.2%) followed with smaller shares of support.
According to APL, Dr. Bawumia leads in 14 of the 16 regions, with Kennedy Agyapong dominating only in the Central and Western North Regions. The report describes Bawumia’s performance as a “clear indication of his growing popularity and strong influence within the party.”
A statement co-signed by Dr. George Domfe, President of APL and a Development Economist at the University of Ghana and by Dr. Hayford Ayerakwa, Director of Research and a Lecturer at the University of Ghana explained that in the Ashanti Region for instance, Dr. Bawumia leads with 65% support, reinforcing his dominance in the Party’s traditional strong hold, while he is overwhelmingly favoured in all five northern regions—Northern, North East, Savannah, Upper East, and Upper West.
It revealed that Dr. Bawumia also leads with % lead in the Eastern Region and with 59% support in the Greater Accra Region, rather pivotal swing Region which could be decisive in an any general election.
“His performance in Greater Accra and other swing regions enhances his prospects in a national contest.
“Leading in 14 regions gives Bawumia a commanding edge in the NPP’s internal race and positions him as a formidable candidate for the 2028 general elections”, the statement noted.
The statement from APL said, “These results reflect the prevailing sentiment among NPP supporters, positioning Dr. Bawumia as the leading figure likely to secure the party’s nomination for the January 31st presidential primaries and subsequently the 2028 general elections.”
Analysts from APL added that Dr. Bawumia’s consistent appeal comes from his “marketability and general approach to his campaign,” which they believe resonates with the grassroots of the party.
The release further noted that the outcome of the poll “is likely to influence ongoing discussions and strategic planning within the NPP” as the party gears up for its internal primaries. Delegates and party officials are said to be paying close attention to the findings, which could shape the tone of the coming weeks.
“Party officials and delegates alike will closely watch these results as they prepare for the crucial elections, emphasizing unity and rallying behind the preferred candidate to ensure victory,” APL said in the release.
With the presidential primaries approaching, political observers say Dr. Bawumia’s commanding lead could give him a major advantage in the final stretch of campaigning.
The statement concluded, “As the NPP gears up for the electoral battle, Dr. Bawumia’s commanding support in the poll may strengthen his bid and energize the party’s campaign efforts for a potential victory in 2028.”
The Africa Policy Lens survey highlights growing momentum within the party for Dr. Bawumia, setting the stage for what could be a decisive contest in the NPP’s leadership race.
