The late former First Lady, Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings, will be given a state burial in recognition of her remarkable contributions to Ghana’s national development, women’s empowerment, and public service.
President John Dramani Mahama made this announcement during a visit to the Rawlings family residence on Tuesday, October 28, 2025, to express his condolences.
“I just want to now announce as President, that we shall give her a state burial,” he said.
President Mahama described the passing of the former First Lady as a deeply painful loss, recalling their last meeting when she was full of energy and passion for the causes she believed in.
“The last time I saw her, she was her lively self, full of energy and passion for the causes she cared about. To hear of her passing within such a short period is truly heartbreaking,” he said.
He praised Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings for her tireless work through the 31st December Women’s Movement, which, he said, continues to change lives across Ghana.
“When you travel around the country, you see evidence of her work; oil palm extraction and production projects that continue to empower women and support families. Her efforts transformed livelihoods and gave dignity to women through economic independence,” he added.
The President, who was accompanied by First Lady Lordina Mahama, Chief of Staff Julius Debrah, and other government officials, signed the book of condolence and assured the Rawlings family of the government’s full support in planning the funeral.
“On behalf of the government and people of Ghana, I extend our deepest sympathy to the family,” he said.
Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings, Ghana’s longest-serving First Lady, passed away on Thursday, October 23, 2025, at the Ridge Hospital in Accra after a short illness.
Known for her bold personality and visionary leadership, she redefined the role of the First Lady from a ceremonial position into one of active leadership and advocacy. Her commitment to women’s rights, child welfare, and social development earned her respect both locally and internationally.
Tributes have poured in from across the country, celebrating her as a trailblazer who broke barriers and shaped Ghana’s political and social transformation.
During the visit, her eldest child and Member of Parliament for Korle Klottey, Dr. Zanetor Rawlings, expressed gratitude to the President and the government for their support during the family’s time of grief.
Nana Konadu’s legacy as a champion for women and a pillar of strength will forever remain a golden chapter in Ghana’s history.
