Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia stands tall in the New Patriotic Party’s 2028 flagbearer race, holding a commanding lead with a wide margin over his competitors, as 72% of the Party’s base voters want him retained as flag-bearer for the next presidential elections.

According to the latest polling data from Global InfoAnalytics, which highlights Dr. Bawumia’s overwhelming support among the Party’s core base as the key factor driving his dominance.

The September 2025 poll, which surveyed NPP voters nationwide, shows that Dr. Bawumia’s popularity within the party remains firm and largely unchallenged.

The data reveals that 72% of NPP voters who supported him in the 2024 general election still prefer him to lead the party into the next election.

His closest rival, Assin Central MP Kennedy Ohene Agyapong, trails far behind with 20%.

For many within the NPP, these numbers tell a story of loyalty and trust. It is not just about figures. It reflects the belief that Dr. Bawumia represents continuity, stability, and a vision they can rally behind.

Nowhere is his support more visible than in the Ashanti Region, the NPP’s stronghold and heartbeat. In the bustling streets of Kumasi and the surrounding towns, people speak of the Vice President with confidence.

The poll shows that 73% of NPP voters in the region who voted for him in 2024 remain committed to his flag-bearership bid, while only 20% prefer Mr. Agyapong.

This clear dominance reinforces his deep connection with the NPP’s grassroots base in the region.

But perhaps the most significant part of the poll comes from an unexpected group which could be the NPP voters who turned their backs on the party in 2024 to support the NDC’s John Dramani Mahama in the last election.

Nationally, this group appears divided, with 39% preferring Dr. Bawumia and 36% leaning towards Mr. Agyapong.

However, in the Ashanti Region, Dr. Bawumia enjoys an impressive recovery among these disillusioned voters.

A striking 63% of them now prefer him to lead the NPP, compared to just 21% for Mr. Agyapong.

This finding suggests that Dr. Bawumia is not only maintaining his existing support but also effectively rebuilding bridges with disenchanted members of the party, especially in its most vital electoral base.

Political observers see this as a significant advantage for the Vice President, positioning him as the candidate most capable of reuniting and energizing the NPP ahead of the 2026 elections.

As the NPP prepares for its internal elections in January 2026, Global InfoAnalytics has announced the commencement of its October 2025 delegates polls.

This next round of surveys will focus on the views of actual delegates who will vote in the NPP’s flagbearer election, providing deeper insight into how grassroots support might translate into delegate votes.

For now, the message from the September data is clear: Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia remains firmly in the lead.
