Former Energy Minister Boakye Kyeremateng Agyarko has officially announced his intention to contest for the position of National Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).
In a press statement issued on Tuesday, September 30,2025, Mr. Agyarko described his decision as a “call to duty” after holding wide consultations with his family, close associates, and members of the party.
He explained that those closest to him, whose lives would be most affected by his decision, were the first people he engaged. He also said he carefully listened to the views of many party members, as well as voices outside the party, before arriving at the decision.
Having factored in all the considerations, I see it as my bounden duty to respond to this call to duty, and hereby announce that I will contest for the position of NATIONAL CHAIRMAN of my party upon the opening of nominations,” Mr. Agyarko stated.
The former minister stressed that his decision comes from a sense of responsibility and service. He pointed out that the NPP needs strong leadership to unite its members and prepare the party for future challenges.
Mr. Agyarko’s announcement comes at a crucial time as the NPP gets ready for internal elections ahead of the 2028 general elections. The party’s upcoming polls are expected to play a key role in determining its direction and strength going into the next national contest.
In his release, Mr. Agyarko said he believes the role of National Chairman requires someone who understands the sacrifices of party members and is ready to dedicate himself fully to the task. He pledged to work with honesty, openness, and commitment to strengthen the NPP’s structures and ensure the party remains attractive to Ghanaians.
The declaration marks the beginning of what many expect to be a competitive race for the NPP’s top leadership position.
