Seven people have been arrested in connection with the armed hijacking of a 5,400-litre fuel tanker on August 7, 2025.

The Ghana Police Service said the arrests happened after a quick and well-coordinated operation in two regions: Greater Accra and Eastern.

The incident started around 12:30 a.m. at the Ablekuma Borkorborkor checkpoint in Accra. Police stopped a green pickup truck carrying three passengers in the back.

When officers approached, two passengers ran away, shouting armed men had attacked them and stolen their fuel tanker near Nsawam the night before. The driver of the pickup also fled, leaving one passenger behind, who was caught after a short chase.

Police said the two victims, both tanker drivers from Tema, were handcuffed and forced into the pickup by the suspects before the checkpoint stop. The stolen tanker’s registration number was confirmed as GT 2493–20.

Using this information, police intelligence led to the arrest of six more suspects at Asikwa Junction near Bunso in the Eastern Region.

The police recovered the stolen tanker, another tanker with registration GN 804–13, and a pumping machine believed to be used to transfer the stolen fuel. They also seized a Volkswagen Golf car linked to the suspects.

All seven suspects are now in police custody and will be brought to court soon. The police have kept the recovered tankers and other items for further investigation.

The Ghana Police Service promised the public that the suspects will face justice for their part in the robbery. They also praised the officers for their quick action and teamwork that led to the arrests.
