The much anticipated meeting between former Member of parliament for Dome Kwabenya Constituency, Sarah Adwoa Safo and the Disciplinary Committee of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) originally scheduled for today, Monday April 7, 2025 has been postponed indefinitely.
The postponement was announced in a press statement issued Sunday evening and signed by the Party’s Director of Finance and Administration William Yamoah, for the Secretary, Disciplinary Committee.
“Further to our earlier correspondence dated March 24, 2025, with reference number NPP/HQ/GS/2025/24/03/DC, inviting you to appear before the Disciplinary Committee on Monday, April 7, 2025, we wish to notify you that the said hearing has formally been postponed.
“Emerging scheduling adjustments and internal considerations necessitated this decision. Once rescheduled, we will notify you promptly of the new date and time for the hearing.
“We appreciate your anticipated cooperation and reaffirm the Party’s commitment to upholding the values of fairness, due process, and procedural integrity in all its deliberations”, the Sunday April 6 statement, addressed to Sarah Adwoa Safo, noted.
Adwoa Safo was officially summoned to appear before the Committee today April 7 after she had disobeyed an official directive from the Party that she members should desist from making public statements which created disaffection and negativity for the Party.
Indeed, Adwoa Safo had embarked on a media interview marathon during which she consistently made uncomplimentary comments about the NPP and some of its key members.
In particular reference was a rather explosive interview Adwoa Safo granted to the Pulse show of Joy News at a time the NPP had issued a directive to all party members to desist from making public statements would bring the name of the party into disrepute.
“As she is aware, the directive explicitly states that all party members must cease discussing party issues that create unrest, negativism and disaffection in the media and other related platforms”, a statement signed and issued by the General Secretary of the NPP, Justine Kodua Frimpong dated March 20, 2025 noted.
The statement said the actions of Sarah Adwoa Safo were in disregard of this directive and also undermined the NPP’s efforts to rebuild and move forward.
The NPP General Secretary’s statement also noted: “as a former Member of Parliament, former Deputy Majority Leader and former Minister of State under the erstwhile NPP government she was expected to set a good example and adhere to the principles of discipline, loyalty and unity that have always defined our great party.
“Her failure to do so not only reflects poorly on her but also in contravention of Article 3(5) of the Party’s constitution, which, amongst others enjoins us to promote and defend the good name of the party,” it added
“In breach of the above provision of the party’s constitution and the directives issued earlier, Sarah Adwoa Safo is here by referred to the National Disciplinary Committee of the party for further action,” the statement concluded
PREVIOUS TROUBLES
This is not the first time Sarah Adwoa Safo is having troubles with her party, the New Patriotic Party.
For the better part of 2021 and 2022, Adwoa Safo has topped headline news over her absent from Parliament as well as from the Ministry for Gender, Children and Social Protection, where she was Minister until she was sacked in February of 2022.
Though the exact reasons for her dismissal were sketchy at the time, she had been absent from the Ministry for several months.
The father of her children, Kennedy Agyapong who was at the time the Member of Parliament for Assin Central, hinted that Adwoa Safo may have lost interest in remaining Minister for Gender, Children and Social Protection after her failed attempt to sack Mrs Gertrude Quashigah, now of blessed memory, the National Coordinator of the School Feeding Program at the time.
Mr. Agyapong said that embarrassing attempt by Adwoa Safo to sack Mrs. Quashigah, in itself, was a wrong move because she had failed to investigate and establish the truth behind some frivolous allegations raised against the very highly respected woman.
Public calls for either the resignation or dismissal of Adwoa Safo heightened after her prolonged absenteeism from both Parliament and the Ministry and the continuous nature of that attitude.
The Presidency, when it became obvious Adwoa was not returning anytime soon, had to direct the then Minister for Sanitation and Water Resources Cecilia Abena Dapaah, to be a caretaker for Adwoa Safo’s office while she continues to cool off in America and periodically appears on Tic Toc with a pretty polished face, dancing and singing.
Kennedy had stated during several media interviews that Adwoa Safo had insisted she would not return to Parliament until it is officially announced that she has been made the Deputy Majority Leader in Parliament.
According to Kennedy Agyapong, “There are fine men and women who have made the efforts to talk to Adwoa; first is the President himself, I don’t know why he has a soft spot for Adwoa Safo. Two is the Chief of Staff. Three is Honourable Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu and myself … A chief had travelled to where she is just to convince her, she refused to come”
He continued: “Adwoa’s condition is that you have to remove Afenyo-Markin as Deputy Majority Leader and announce it publicly that Afenyo-Markin has been removed then she would take a plane and come. Her second demand is that if she does not get what she wants, she would not come to vote for the E-Levy and if the E-Levy is not passed, the country would go to IMF.”
Kennedy continued: “Adwoa Safo; they hired a private jet for her to fly to Ghana and when she came, she refused to come to Parliament. The Chief of Staff, after buying the tickets and flying her in, she had to take a motorcade to Adwoa’s house. She stood behind her gates for 30 minutes, what kind of rudeness is that, before she opened. The Chief of Staff was made to sit at her living room for 35 minutes. When she came she was tired so we could not vote. Then going back, she was demanding another private jet. Ahhhh!”
