    Outgoing Member of Parliament for Ablekuma West constituency in the Greater Accra Region, Hon. Ursula Owusu-Ekuful, has expressed satisfaction over her 3 consecutive terms as representative of the constituents in Parliament and further thanked everyone for the opportunity given her to serve.

    Appreciating what she describes as a great opportunity to contribute his quota to the living condition of constituents and Ghanaians in general, she appreciated the opportunity to serve in her capability for the past 12 years

    Giving a hint about an end to parliamentary duties, Hon. Ursula said the next chapter of her life is unfolding.

    “Thank you Ablekuma West!! Sayonara… Thank you Lord for the opportunity to serve. Next chapter in my life unfolding so let’s see what He has in store for me. Looking into the future with confidence” she wrote on her official Facebook page.

    Representing the New Patriotic Party (NPP), she lost her seat to Rev. Kweku Addo of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in a closely contested race. Rev. Addo secured 31,866 votes, while Hon. Ursula Owusu-Ekuful garnered 26,575 votes.

    Under Hon. Ursula parliamentary leadership, she worked on several initiatives including efforts to enhance the educational infrastructure and academic empowerment for the constituents.

    She initiated the establishment of the Mpoasei basic school consisting of 3-storey 18-unit classroom block, 1000 beneficiaries of Hon. Ursula digital skills training programme, Ebenezer Senior High School ultra-modern library – ICT and robotics center, St. Margaret Mary SHS consisting of 2-storey 9-unit classroom block, Tunga Islamic School for the Islamic School for the Muslim community in Tunga, Akweibu Basic School consisting of 3-storey 9-unit classroom block.

    Under Sports development, she constructed basketball court in Dansoman SSNIT Flats, support for women’s football, donation of jerseys and footballs, Ursula CUP which was a massive talent development initiative showcasing sports development, construction of tennis court KIT FIT in Dansoman, Tunga basketball court, support to Dansoman table tennis Association, support for Dansoman Draughts Association, support to Dansoman Keys Basketball Club, financial support to football teams across the constituency, renovation of Dansoman Children’s Park inro modern facility.

    In addition to her Parliamentary duties, she also served as Communications and Digitalisation Minister for eight years since 2017.

    As the Minister of Communications, she did oversight of the government’s infrastructure programme for the ICT Sector, the development of a robust framework to support the digitalisation of the economy and the scaling up of e-government services with a national broadband and total connectivity for the unserved and underserved at the heart of the agenda.

    She supported the local tech start up ecosystem, nurturing the development of indigenous technology and encouraging women, children and persons with disabilities to engage in ICT.

    Hon. Owusu-Ekuful was called to the Ghana Bar in October 1990. She then served for 10 years as an associate at Akufo-Addo, Prempeh & Co., Legal Practitioners, and Notaries Public. From September 2005 to May 2008, she took on the role of Acting Managing Director at Western Telesystems (Westel). Mrs. Owusu-Ekuful, from May 2008 to January 2009 served as the Corporate and External Affairs Director at ZAIN Ghana.

    She holds a certificate in Government Integrity from the International Law Institute, Washington DC, a Project Management and Planning Certificate from Ghana Institute of Management and Public Administration and a Masters in Conflict Peace and Security from the Kofi Annan International Peacekeeping Training Centre. She is a lawyer, women’s rights activist, technology advocate and a product of the University of Ghana And The Ghana School Of Law.

    Mrs. Owusu-Ekuful is a member of the Ghana Bar Association, International Federation of Women Lawyers (FIDA) and African Women Lawyers Association (AWLA). She is also the development Queen (Nkosuo Hemaa) of Akyem Asuom in the Eastern Region of Ghana.

    She received the ‘CRANS MONTANA FORUM’ S GOLD MEDAL, at its 30th anniversary forum held in Geneva, Switzerland. She joined the late former President of Ghana, Jerry John Rawlings and Former UN Secretary General, Kofi Annan as the only Ghanaians to have received the coveted award.

    She has also been awarded by the International Federation of Women Lawyers (FIDA), a Non-Profit Organization of women lawyers for her tremendous work in the protection of the rights of Women and Children as well as recognition for her exceptional commitment and participation as a valuable partner in ITU Telecom World.
