The New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) Vice Presidential Candidate, Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh has assured small-scale miners of the party’s commitment to supporting responsible mining.
During a campaign event at Seyerano in the Sefwi Juaboso constituency of the Western North Region, Dr. Opoku Prempeh, also known as “NAPO,” pledged that an NPP administration led by Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia would provide miners with technical training to foster responsible mining practices.
“If you know you don’t have the necessary permits to legalize your mining activities, then if Bawumia is voted into power, he will ensure you receive the required documentation to make your mining legal, along with essential training for safer practices,” he assured.
Addressing a durbar attended by Chiefs, Queen Mothers, religious leaders, and various community members, NAPO made a case for Dr. Bawumia’s leadership over former President John Mahama as Ghana approaches the December 7 elections.
He highlighted the NPP’s commitment to balancing mining with environmental sustainability, stating, “The NPP government is not against mining; we are against the environmental damage caused by illegal mining activities. Our government will ensure that mining practices do not compromise the safety of our natural resources.”
NAPO appealed to Juaboso constituents to support the NPP’s Parliamentary Candidate, emphasizing the importance of unity for developmental progress.
He criticized the NDC’s parliamentary minority for obstructing beneficial policies, urging the electorate to vote for a government that promotes sustainable mining and socio-economic growth.
In addition to speaking with the mining communities, NAPO met with students from the College of Health in Sefwi Asafo. He reminded them of the NPP’s implementation of the Free Senior High School (Free SHS) policy, which has enabled thousands to access secondary education without financial burdens.
He also noted the restoration of nursing trainee allowances, which were scrapped during John Mahama’s administration. “It is prudent to support the party that introduced Free SHS and reinstated your allowances, rather than choose someone who now claims to have changed,” he asserted.
In the Bia East Constituency, a Queen Mother openly criticized the local NDC MP, urging him to identify any development projects he has accomplished in the area. Expressing her support for the NPP, she claimed that all improvements in the constituency have been driven by the NPP.
She even stated she would step down as Queen Mother if the NDC MP could prove otherwise.
