The Central Region has seen significant progress in education infrastructure since 2017, with 350 new school facilities constructed. These include 222 basic schools and 128 Senior High and Technical Schools (SHS).

The new SHS and technical school facilities consist of 58 classroom blocks, 43 dormitories, three dining halls, three administration blocks, four assembly halls, six libraries and ICT/science laboratories, and eight other facilities such as washrooms and infirmaries.

Central Regional Minister, Mrs. Justina Marigold Assan, highlighted the projects during a recent town hall meeting.

    Logistical support for education

From 2017 to date, the government has provided substantial logistical support to the region’s education sector.

This includes one Land Cruiser Prado for the Regional Director of Education, 22 pick-up vehicles for district education directors, 10 pick-ups for heads of senior high and technical schools, 34 buses, 153 motorcycles for School Improvement Support Officers (SISOs), and 455 laptops for schools under the Ghana Accountability for Learning Outcomes Project (GALOP).

These efforts have helped improve mobility and access to educational resources for students and staff.

    Agenda 111 Healthcare Projects

Mrs. Assan also announced the progress of eight Agenda 111 healthcare projects currently underway in districts such as Assin North, Assin South, Gomoa East, and Twifo Hemang Lower Denkyira.

These projects aim to enhance healthcare infrastructure across the region.

    Road infrastructure development

Key road projects completed in the Central Region include the 31.2 km Assin Foso–Assin Praso Road, the dualization of the 30 km Kasoa–Winneba Road, and the 12.5 km Ojobi–Senya Beraku Road. Other projects include the rehabilitation of the Asikuma–Bedum–Besease Road, construction of the Twifo Praso Bridge, and the reconstruction of the Essaim–Assin Manso Road.

Additional road improvements have been made in Dunkwa, Awisem, Cape Coast, and Kasoa, with bitumen surfacing and asphaltic overlays enhancing access throughout the region.

    Water and sanitation achievements

In the area of water and sanitation, 2,195 boreholes have been constructed, serving over 1.7 million people in rural communities. Additionally, 261 CCTV cameras have been installed in key areas to enhance security, feeding data to the Regional Police Headquarters.

    Energy and lighting initiatives

The region has benefitted from the distribution of 58,575 streetlights, sourced from the District Assembly Common Fund and the Ministry of Energy.

The lights, ranging from 6 to 150 watts, have improved visibility and safety in public spaces.

    Elmina fishing port rehabilitation

The Elmina Fishing Port has undergone extensive rehabilitation, including the construction of sheds, toilets, an administration block, and a fish market.

The project aims to boost the economic livelihood of eight coastal districts, ensuring sustainable development for the fishing industry.

    Market and economic development projects

Market infrastructure has also seen upgrades, including the construction of 60 lockable shops at Mandela Market in Agona West, the Integrated Bulk Market in Mankessim, and pavement works for Kasoa Old Market.

The completion of these projects has improved commercial activity in the region, with 539 young entrepreneurs trained in business under the BizBox programme and over 1,500 youths receiving grants and start-up kits.

Astroturf and One District One Factory (1D1F)

The region now boasts 12 newly constructed Astroturf sports facilities.

Under the government’s One District One Factory (1D1F) initiative, the Central Region has completed 11 factories, with another 11 currently under construction.

These projects have created direct employment for 1,095 people and indirect employment for 14,750 more.

The Central Region has experienced transformative growth across multiple sectors, thanks to ongoing efforts by the current administration.

From education and healthcare to road construction and economic development, the region is set on a path of continued improvement.
