    Biography:

    Stephen Michael Gleason, born on March 19, 1977, in Spokane, Washington, attended Gonzaga Preparatory School, where he excelled in both football and baseball. His athletic prowess earned him a scholarship to Washington State University (WSU), where he continued to shine in both sports.

    College Career

    At WSU, Gleason stood out as a linebacker for the Cougars football team and also played as an outfielder for the baseball team. Known for his tenacity and leadership, Gleason set a school record for triples in baseball and also played a key role in the football team’s defense.

    Professional Football Career

    Although undrafted in the 2000 NFL Draft, Steve Gleason signed with the Indianapolis Colts as a free agent before joining the New Orleans Saints. He made a significant impact on special teams, with his most memorable moment occurring on September 25, 2006, when he blocked a punt against the Atlanta Falcons in the first game back at the Superdome after Hurricane Katrina. This play became a symbol of hope and resilience for New Orleans.

    Personal Life

    Steve Gleason married Michel Varisco in 2008, and they have two children, Rivers and Gray. In 2011, Gleason was diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease. Despite this diagnosis, he has remained a beacon of hope and inspiration, using his platform to raise awareness and funds for ALS research.

    Team Gleason Foundation:

    In response to his diagnosis, Steve Gleason founded the Team Gleason Foundation, which aims to provide support for people living with ALS and to promote ALS research. The foundation has been instrumental in advocating for better access to technology and equipment for ALS patients. Also helping them maintain their independence and quality of life.

    Documentary and Recognition:

    The documentary highlighted his determination, the support of his family, and his advocacy work. In 2019, Gleason was awarded the Congressional Gold Medal. One of the highest civilian honors in the United States, in recognition of his contributions to ALS awareness and also his inspirational impact.
