    Carey attended James Ford Rhodes High School, where he graduated in 1975. He then went on to Kent State University (KSU), but his academic journey was tumultuous. He was expelled twice for poor academic performance and eventually left KSU without a degree.

    Military Service

    In 1980, Carey enlisted in the United States Marine Corps Reserve. He served for six years, during which he developed his signature crew cut hairstyle and horn-rimmed glasses. His time in the Marines instilled in him a sense of discipline and resilience that would later benefit his career in entertainment.

    Early Career

    After leaving the Marines, Carey began his career in stand-up comedy. He performed at various comedy clubs and gained recognition for his relatable humor and quick wit. His big break came in 1988 when he appeared on “Star Search,” a popular talent competition show.     In 1995, Carey created and starred in “The Drew Carey Show,” a sitcom that aired on ABC. The show was a huge success, running for nine seasons until 2004. It was set in Cleveland and revolved around a fictionalized version of Carey’s life as an office worker. The show was known for its quirky humor and memorable characters, and it also solidified Carey’s status as a household name.

    In addition to his sitcom, Carey became the host of the U.S. version of “Whose Line Is It Anyway?” in 1998. The improv comedy show featured a rotating cast of comedians who performed various improvisational games.
