A private legal practitioner, Nana Agyei Baffour Awuah, has emerged victorious in the New Patriotic Party (NPP), parliamentary primary for the Manhyia South Constituency.

The election, held on Sunday, July 14, 2024, saw Baffour Awuah garnering 376 votes, securing a decisive win over his closest competitor, Nana Owusu Prempeh, also the brother of the outgoing MP for Manhyia South constituency, Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, received 141 votes.

Following his victory, the private legal practitioner, Nana Agyei, expressed his gratitude to the party members and delegates for their support. In his victory speech, he emphasized the importance of unity within the NPP ranks as they prepare for the upcoming general elections in December.

“The time has come for us to break the eight. We will not allow power to slip off our hands, not today, not tomorrow [“tumiyidze, yen manunko ne, yen manunkokyina]. Whatever means we have to use to remain in power, we will do. We will work hard, morning, day and night to make sure that power does not go to the NDC,” he stated, highlighting his commitment to maintaining the party’s stronghold in the constituency.

Acknowledging the influence of Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh on his political career, Nana Agyei Baffour Awuah described the outgoing MP as a mentor and elder brother.

“You’ve been an elder brother, mentor and comrade. Your words of advice and good counsel have served me well in my political career,” he stated.

“At the heart of NAPO is service to people and service to leadership. Working with him and for him at the constituency, I observe his vision in action, his passion and determination to ensure that he delivers quality for the Ghanaian people as desired by his leader, the president of Ghana.

James Owusu and Akwasi Coker Gyambibi trailed behind with seven and two votes, respectively. The primary, which saw a total of six aspirants initially vying for the nomination, was marked by a notable absence of two candidates, Kwadwo Amankwaah Antwi and Abdul Rahman Diallo, who failed to submit their nomination documents in time.

The election was prompted by the nomination of the Member of Parliament, Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, as the running mate to the NPP’s flag-bearer, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.

This development necessitated the selection of a new parliamentary candidate for the Manhyia South constituency, leading to a keenly contested primary among the remaining contenders.

The primary election itself was characterized by a peaceful atmosphere, with delegates from across the constituency participating in the democratic process.

The turnout reflected strong engagement and interest among party members in selecting their parliamentary candidate for the crucial electoral contest ahead.

As the political landscape continues to evolve, the focus remains on the strategies and leadership that will guide the NPP in maintaining its position and achieving its goals in the challenging electoral environment of Ghana.
