History
The inaugural Sunbeam Electric Scottish Open took place in 1972 on the picturesque Downfield Golf Club in Dundee. In a thrilling sudden-death playoff, Neil Coles also emerged victorious by sinking a crucial 12-foot putt to defeat Brian Huggett. The total prize money for that event was £10,000, with a first prize of £2,000.
The following year (1973), the tournament moved to the iconic Old Course at St. Andrews, where Graham Marsh secured a commanding victory, winning by six strokes over Peter Oosterhuis. The prize money increased to £15,000, with a first prize of £2,500. After a hiatus, the Scottish Open returned in 1986 under a new sponsorship deal with Bell’s, also rebranding the former Glasgow Open held at Haggs Castle Golf Club.
Gleneagles became the host venue in 1987, and the tournament shifted to the week before the Open Championship. The BBC began broadcasting live coverage of the event in 1987, continuing until 1993.
