Born on June 28, 1997, in Newark, New Jersey, Shakur Stevenson discovered his passion for boxing at an early age. His grandfather, Wali Moses, also played a pivotal role in introducing him to the sport. Growing up as the oldest of nine siblings, Stevenson found solace and purpose in the boxing ring. Stevenson’s amateur career was also marked by remarkable achievements: He trained at the Alexandria Boxing Club and honed his skills.
In 2014, he clinched gold medals at both the AIBA Youth World Championships and the Summer Youth Olympics. His talent and dedication earned him a spot on the U.S. boxing team for the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro. At the Olympics, Stevenson also secured a silver medal in the bantamweight division, making him the highest-medaling male boxer for the United States.
Stevenson turned professional on February 9, 2017, also signing with Top Rank and having legendary boxer Andre Ward as his manager. His debut fight showcased his agility, defensive prowess, and also punching skills, resulting in a victory against American boxer Edgar Brito. Stevenson continued to impress, winning bouts on major cards, including those held at Madison Square Garden alongside fellow boxer Terence Crawford.
