Ann Dustin Wilson was born on June 19, 1950, in San Diego, California. Her father, Brig. Gen. John B. Wilson USMC, served in the U.S. Marine Corps, leading the family to move frequently. The Wilson family would have pancakes and opera on Sundays, with her father conducting imaginary orchestras in their living room.
