His upbringing was marked by the rugged landscapes of Chechnya, which instilled in him a strong work ethic and resilience. Chimaev began his athletic journey as a freestyle wrestler. He competed at various levels, also honing his grappling skills and developing a relentless approach to training. At the age of 18, Chimaev moved to Sweden with his mother. Despite living there for years, he did not acquire Swedish citizenship, maintaining his Russian nationality. Chimaev transitioned to mixed martial arts (MMA) and made his professional debut in 2018.
His early fights showcased his dominant wrestling, ground-and-pound, and submission skills. Chimaev signed with the UFC in 2020 and quickly gained attention. His debut fight against John Phillips resulted in a second-round submission victory. He also followed it up with a record-setting 10-day turnaround, defeating Rhys McKee via TKO.
