The African Regent Hotel hosted a momentous event this past Saturday: the launch of “Entrepreneurial Success,” a comprehensive new book by Mary Anane Awuku. The book, celebrated for its in-depth exploration of entrepreneurship within the Ghanaian context, promises to be an essential resource for aspiring entrepreneurs, policymakers, educators, and business enthusiasts.

Mrs. Mary Anane Awuku, wife of Mr. Sammy Awuku, Director General of the National Lottery Authority, has leveraged her extensive experience and insights to author this seminal work. “Entrepreneurial Success” delves into the core competences, motivations, challenges, and opportunities faced by Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) in Ghana. The book launch was graced by a distinguished audience, including industry leaders, government officials, and eminent personalities from various sectors.

    Government’s Commitment to SMEs

The Special Guest of Honor, Hon. Abena Osei Asare, emphasized the pivotal role of SMEs in Ghana’s economic framework. “SMEs constitute over 90% of existing companies, account for 85% of manufacturing jobs, and contribute 70% to our national GDP,” she stated. Recognizing their significance, the government is set to launch the SME Opportunities and Growth Fund in July. This initiative aims to assist SMEs in gaining a stronger foothold and to transition select SMEs into larger enterprises, thereby spurring economic growth and job creation. “This group, informed by practical engagements with targeted and existing SMEs in Ghana, will be a guiding light in our path to understanding the dynamism of entrepreneurs and enterprises,” Hon. Osei Asare added.

    Insightful Review and Endorsements

The book was meticulously reviewed by a noted commentator, who praised its local relevance and practical approach. The reviewer highlighted the book’s structure, engaging writing style, and comprehensive coverage of entrepreneurial competences and motivations. “Each chapter is filled with practical examples and case studies from the Ghanaian context, offering actionable insights for entrepreneurs,” the reviewer remarked.

Mr. Alex Dadey, Chairman of the Occasion, commended Mrs. Awuku for her dedication to entrepreneurship and wealth creation. Reflecting on his own journey, Mr. Dadey noted the importance of apprenticeship and continuous learning. “Mary has done excellently well. She has followed a path of acquiring skills and knowledge before branching out on her own. Wealth creation should be coupled with philanthropy to solve societal problems, such as poverty eradication,” he stated. He also stressed the need for more documentation of entrepreneurial journeys to serve as a guide for future generations.

Content and Structure of “Entrepreneurial Success”

“Entrepreneurial Success” is organized into six well-defined chapters, each addressing critical aspects of entrepreneurship:

    Competences for Entrepreneurial Success

This chapter discusses the skills and attributes necessary for entrepreneurial success, highlighting the importance of integrating these competences into entrepreneurial performance.

    Personal Competences

Focused on the individual, this chapter explores seven micro-level competences that drive entrepreneurial success, providing practical examples and applications.

    Leadership, Relational, and Organizational Competences

This section examines the skills required to lead teams and manage organizational dynamics effectively, crucial for sustaining a successful business.

    Motivations for Entrepreneurial Endeavors

This chapter delves into what drives individuals to pursue entrepreneurship, emphasizing proactive rather than reactive motivations.

    Challenges Facing Entrepreneurs in Ghana

The author identifies unique Ghanaian challenges that affect SMEs, offering insights into overcoming these hurdles.

    Opportunities for Entrepreneurial Growth

Concluding on a positive note, this chapter highlights the growth prospects and avenues available for Ghana
