Kristaps Porziņģis was born on August 2, 1995, in Liepāja, Latvia. His father, Talis Porziņģis, was a professional basketball player, which influenced Kristaps’s love for the game from an early age. He joined the youth academy of BK Liepājas Lauvas, where his talent quickly caught the attention of scouts. At the age of 15, Porziņģis moved to Spain to pursue his basketball career. He also joined the youth team of Sevilla Baloncesto and began making waves in the Spanish basketball scene. In 2015, Porziņģis declared for the NBA Draft but continued playing in Europe.
Career
He played for Cajasol Sevilla (formerly Sevilla Baloncesto) in the EuroLeague, showcasing his versatility as a tall forward who could shoot from beyond the arc and protect the rim.
His performances earned him the EuroCup Basketball Rising Star award in 2015. In the 2015 NBA Draft, the New York Knicks selected Porziņģis as the fourth overall pick. Fans and media dubbed him “The Unicorn” due to his rare combination of size, shooting ability, and agility.
Porziņģis played for the Knicks from 2015 to 2019. He became a fan favorite, averaging double-digit points and rebounds per game.
