Biography:
Rachel Jane Reeves was born on February 13, 1979, in the London Borough of Lewisham, England. She is a member of the Labour Party and has been serving as the Shadow Chancellor of the Exchequer since 2021. Reeves has been the Member of Parliament for Leeds West since 2010, making significant contributions to British politics.
She hails from a family of educators, with both her parents, Graham and Sally Reeves, working as teachers. Reeves attended the comprehensive Cator Park School for Girls in Beckenham. During her secondary school years, she showcased her intellectual prowess by winning the British Under-14 girls chess championship title in a tournament organized by the now-defunct British Women’s Chess Association.
She pursued higher education at New College, Oxford, where she studied Philosophy, Politics, and Economics, also achieving a 2:1 degree. Additionally, she continued her studies at the London School of Economics before embarking on her professional journey.
Career
Reeves worked at the Bank of England and later at HBOS (Halifax Bank of Scotland) before entering politics. Elected in the 2010 general election, she served in Ed Miliband’s Shadow Cabinet as Shadow Chief Secretary to the Treasury from 2011 to 2013 and as Shadow Secretary of State for Work and Pensions from 2013 to 2015. Following Jeremy Corbyn’s election as Labour leader in 2015, she became a backbencher and chaired the Business, Energy, and Industrial Strategy Committee from 2017 to 2020. Also After Keir Starmer’s leadership in 2020, she was appointed Shadow Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster and Shadow Minister for the Cabinet Office, shadowing Michael Gove.
In May 2021, Reeves replaced Anneliese Dodds as Shadow Chancellor of the Exchequer.
As Shadow Chancellor, Reeves adheres to “modern supply-side economics”, focusing on infrastructure, education, and labor supply while rejecting tax cuts and deregulation. In 2023, she also coined the term “securonomics” to describe her version of this economic policy. Rachel Reeves is married to Nicholas Joicey, and they have two children. Her sister is Ellie Reeves.
