David Wagner was born on October 19, 1971, in Frankfurt, West Germany. His unique background reflects his multicultural heritage. His biological father is from Thailand, while his mother is German. Before his birth, his mother married an American, making him the son of an American stepfather. Wagner also began his professional football career as a striker with Eintracht Frankfurt in 1990. Over the years, he also played for several clubs, including Mainz 05, Darmstadt 98, FC Gütersloh, and Schalke 04.

His most successful period was at Mainz, where he scored 19 goals in four years. Wagner was part of the Schalke squad that clinched the 1997 UEFA Cup. Interestingly, Wagner also represented the United States national team as a player. Between 1996 and 1998, he also earned eight caps for the US. Wagner transitioned to football management after retiring as a player. From 2011 to 2015, he managed Borussia Dortmund II.  In November 2015, he took charge of Huddersfield Town,also leading them to the Premier League via the 2017 EFL Championship play-off final.

After leaving Huddersfield in January 2019, he also had brief stints at Bundesliga club Schalke 04 and Swiss Super League club Young Boys. Currently, he serves as the manager of EFL Championship club Norwich City.
