Biography:
Surjit Patar (born Surjit Hunjan; January 14, 1945 – May 11, 2024) was a prominent Punjabi writer and poet from Punjab, India. His poetry resonated with the general public and garnered acclaim from critics.

- Surjit Patar was born in Pattar Kalan, Punjab, British India.
- His father’s name was Harbhajan Singh, and his mother was Harbhajan Kaur. He had four older sisters.
- Patar matriculated from a nearby village school and later pursued his studies in arts at Randhir College, Kapurthala.

- He earned a Master’s degree from Punjabi University, Patiala, and also a Ph.D. in Literature from Guru Nanak Dev University, Amritsar, focusing on the “Transformation of Folklore in Guru Nanak Vani”.
Career:
Patar began writing poetry in the mid-sixties.

- “Birkh Arz Kare” (Thus Spake the Tree)
- Also “Hanere Vich Sulagdi Varnmala” (Words Smouldering in the Dark)

- Also “Patjhar Di Pazeb” (Anklet of Autumn)
- “Surzameen” (Music Land)
Patar also translated works by Federico García Lorca, Girish Karnad, Bertolt Brecht, and Pablo Neruda into Punjabi. He adapted plays by Jean Giraudoux, Euripides, and Racine.
He contributed to television scripts on Punjabi poets from Sheikh Farid to Shiv Kumar Batalvi .
