St. Joseph declares local state of emergency after tornado damages homes, businesses

On the evening of May 7, 2024, Michigan was struck by a series of powerful tornadoes, leaving a trail of destruction, injuries, and chaos. As the state grappled with severe weather, communities rallied together to face the aftermath and demonstrate their resilience.

    • Total Tornadoes (1950-2024): Michigan has experienced 1,219 tornadoes during this period.
    • Fatalities: Fortunately, the recent tornadoes in 2024 did not result in any fatalities.
    • Damage: Tornadoes have caused significant property damage over the years, with an estimated total of $1.27 billion in property damage since 1950.

    The Tornadoes Unleash Havoc

    • Portage, a city about 80 miles southwest of Lansing, bore the brunt of one of the tornadoes. The storm ripped through buildings, knocked down trees, and also left power lines strewn across the area.
    • A FedEx facility in Portage suffered significant damage when the tornado tore off its roof, partially collapsing the structure. Shockingly, 50 people were trapped inside the building. First responders worked tirelessly to free them, despite the challenge posed by downed power lines.
    • The National Weather Service (NWS) issued urgent warnings, urging residents to take cover immediately. The tornado emergency extended to Union City, more than 120 miles east of Portage.Rare tornado that tore through Grand Blanc was EF-2 | wzzm13.com

    State of Emergency Declared

    • The impact was widespread. Thousands of residents faced power outages, hail, and relentless tornado warnings.
    • In response to the extensive damage caused by the tornadoes, Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer declared a state of emergency for several counties, also including Kalamazoo, St. Joseph, Branch, and Cass. This declaration allowed for coordinated efforts to address the crisis and provide aid to affected communities.
    • The severity of the situation echoed the devastation witnessed in other parts of the central United States, where tornadoes had already wreaked havoc in states like Kansas, South Dakota, and Missouri.

    How It Happened

    • Residents described the tornado as hitting with almost no warning, leaving little time for preparation.
    • The severe weather in Michigan followed a deadly tornado and also storm in Barnsdall, Oklahoma, which left one person dead, five injured, and dozens of homes damaged.Significant damage reported in Michigan amid severe storms, tornadoes Tuesday | Fox Weather

    After The Tragedy

    • Despite the chaos, they supported one another, checked on neighbors, and worked together to clear debris and assess the damage.
    • Social media buzzed with videos capturing the tornadoes’ fury, emphasizing the need for preparedness and vigilance during severe weather events.
    • The tornadoes in Michigan followed a deadly storm in Barnsdall, Oklahoma, where one person lost their life, five were injured, and numerous homes were damaged. Across the central U.S., more than a dozen tornadoes had struck, leaving a path of destruction in their wake.
    • As Michigan rebuilds, the tornadoes serve as a stark reminder of the unpredictable forces of nature. Preparedness, community support, and timely warnings are crucial in mitigating the impact of such disasters.
