Biography
Auston Taylour Matthews was born in San Ramon, California, to Brian (from California) and Ema (originally from Hermosillo, Mexico). His family moved to Scottsdale, Arizona, when he was an infant. During his formative years, Matthews displayed a strong inclination toward sports, playing both baseball and ice hockey. His excellent hand-eye coordination made him particularly skilled in baseball.
Matthews emerged as a top prospect through the USA Hockey National Team Development Program in the United States Hockey League (USHL). Before being drafted into the NHL in 2016, he played for the ZSC Lions in the Swiss National League, even winning a Swiss Cup title that same year. The Toronto Maple Leafs recognized his immense talent and selected him as the first overall pick in the draft.
In his NHL debut, Matthews achieved a historic feat by becoming the first player in modern NHL history to score four goals. His rookie season in 2016–17 saw him score 40 goals, also setting a Maple Leafs rookie record and becoming just the fourth teenager in league history to reach this milestone.
Matthews’ outstanding performance earned him the Calder Memorial Trophy as the NHL’s top rookie for that season.

- In 2020–21, Matthews secured the Maurice “Rocket” Richard Trophy as the league’s leading goal scorer with 41 goals in 52 games.
- The 2021–22 season was even more remarkable for him:
- He set records for most goals scored in a single season by both an American-born player and a Maple Leaf.
- Matthews also reached the 60-goal mark for the first time.
- He won the Rocket Richard Trophy for the second consecutive season.
- Additionally, he was awarded the Ted Lindsay Award (most outstanding player, as voted by his peers) and the Hart Memorial Trophy (most valuable player).
- Matthews has been chosen to represent Toronto as an All-Star six times.
