On Thursday, May 2, 2024, the Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo government officially commissioned and handed over the reconstructed Appiatse community to the victims of the Appiatse disaster. Let me provide you with some context on the news:

    Appiatse Disastter:

On January 20, 2022, a devastating explosion occurred in Appiatse, a mining community in the Prestea Huni Valley Municipal Assembly in the Western Region of Ghana. The explosion was caused by a truck carrying explosives to a mining site. Also resulting in significant damage to the community. Approximately 13 people lost their lives, and many others were injured.

    Reconstruction Efforts:

In response to this tragedy, the government took action. The Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources established the Appiatse Support Fund, also chaired by Dr. Joyce Aryee, and the Appiatse Reconstruction Implementation Committee. Their goal was to raise necessary funds and also oversee the community’s redevelopment.

Completed Redevelopment: After two years of hard work, the first phase of Appiatse’s redevelopment has been successfully completed. The once-ruined mining community now resembles a modern township. It features approximately 120 family-sized bungalows arranged in a grid layout.

Here are some key features of the new Appiatse:

    1. Family-Sized Bungalows: The community boasts approximately 120 family-sized bungalows, also thoughtfully laid out in a grid pattern.
    2. Infrastructure: Roads, utilities, and essential services have been restored. Also providing a solid foundation for residents.
    3. Hope Restored: Families who endured the tragedy now have a fresh start—a safe and also comfortable environment to rebuild their lives.

Handover: The government, in collaboration with its partners. Officially handed over the new community to the victims of the explosion. This also marks a significant milestone in the recovery process for Appiatse.

    Handover Ceremony:

Today, on May 2, 2024, the government, in collaboration with its partners, officially handed over the reconstructed Appiatse community to the victims of the explosion. It’s a moment of celebration, resilience, and also hope.

As we witness the rebirth of Appiatse, let us remember the strength of its people and the commitment of the Akufo-Addo government.
