On January 20, 2022, a devastating explosion occurred in Appiatse, a mining community in the Prestea Huni Valley Municipal Assembly in the Western Region of Ghana. Approximately 13 people lost their lives, and many others were injured.

The Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources established the Appiatse Support Fund, also chaired by Dr. Joyce Aryee, and the Appiatse Reconstruction Implementation Committee. Their goal was to raise necessary funds and also oversee the community’s redevelopment.
Completed Redevelopment: After two years of hard work, the first phase of Appiatse’s redevelopment has been successfully completed. The once-ruined mining community now resembles a modern township. It features approximately 120 family-sized bungalows arranged in a grid layout.
