Anne Hathaway Reveals Kissing 10 Men in Chemistry Test
In a recent interview with V Magazine, Oscar-winning actor Anne Hathaway shared an intriguing story from her early days in Hollywood. She revealed that during the 2000s, it was common practice for producers to ask actors to make out with each other during chemistry tests.
A Different Approach:
“It was considered normal to ask an actor to make out with other actors to test for chemistry,” Hathaway explained. “Which is actually the worst way to do it.” She recalled being told, “We have ten guys coming today, and you’re cast. Aren’t you excited to make out with all of them?” However, Hathaway wasn’t excited; she found the idea rather gross.
Despite her reservations, Hathaway went along with the request. She was young and aware of the risks of being labeled “difficult” in the industry. So, she pretended to be excited and got through the chemistry test. Looking back, she acknowledges that it wasn’t a power play or an attempt to hurt her; it was simply a different time.
For her new film, The Idea of You, she asked actors to choose a song that their character would love. During the audition, they played the selected song, and Hathaway and the actors danced together. It was a more organic and authentic way to gauge chemistry.
Galitzine’s Experience:
One of the actors she worked with, Nicholas Galitzine, described their joint audition as almost spiritual. They connected immediately, and the chemistry was palpable. Galitzine also underwent a chaste chemistry test for another film, Red, White and Royal Blue, where he plays Prince Henry.
Anne Hathaway’s candid revelation sheds light on the behind-the-scenes practices in Hollywood and how times have changed. Chemistry tests may have been “gross” back then, but now filmmakers are finding more creative ways to assess compatibility between actors.
In retrospect, Hathaway acknowledges that times have changed, and the industry now prioritizes more respectful and creative ways to assess chemistry between actors. Her openness sheds light on the behind-the-scenes dynamics that actors navigate in pursuit of their craft.
