    What Is Passover (Pesach)?

    • It commemorates the emancipation of the Israelites from slavery in ancient Egypt.
    • The holiday spans from the 15th through the 22nd of the Hebrew month of Nissan (April 22 – 30, 2024).
    • The name “Pesach” means “to pass over,” signifying how G‑d spared the Jewish homes during the last of the ten plagues on the Egyptians.

    How Is Passover Celebrated?

    1. No Chametz (Leaven):
      • During Passover, chametz (leavened bread) is strictly avoided. Jewish households thoroughly clean and also remove all leavened products from their homes.
      • Instead, matzah (unleavened bread) is consumed throughout the holiday.
    2. The Seders:
      • The Seder meals are central to Passover observance. Families gather on the first two nights (April 22 and 23) for these festive meals.
      • The Seder plate includes symbolic foods:
        • Matzah: The unleavened bread, representing haste during the Exodus.
        • Maror: Bitter herbs, symbolizing the bitterness of slavery.
        • Also Four cups of wine: Signifying freedom and redemption.
        • Charoset: A mixture of fruits, nuts, and wine, also representing the mortar used by the Israelites in Egypt.
    3. Retelling the Story of the Exodus:
      • The Haggadah (Passover narrative) is read during the Seder. It recounts the story of the Israelites’ liberation from Egypt.
      • Families engage in lively discussions, sing songs, and reflect on the significance of freedom.Passover 2024: A celebration of resilience and unity - The Jerusalem Post
