Republican Number 3: More Republicans Joining effort to Removing Mike Johnson From power

Mike Johnson broke his promise. But Trump helped.

In a significant development, a third House Republican has joined an effort to remove Speaker Mike Johnson from his position. The move, led by Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.), aims to force a vote on whether to oust Johnson as speaker. Here are the key details:

    The Motion to Vacate:

      • Rep. Paul Gosar (R-Ariz.) signed onto the “motion to vacate,” which would trigger a vote within two legislative days.
      • A simple majority vote would be needed to succeed in removing Johnson from power.
      • Rep. Thomas Massie (R-Ky.) also joined the motion earlier this week but expressed a preference for Johnson to resign voluntarily.

    Reasons Behind the Move:

      • The hard-right members of the conference, including the three Republicans also supporting the motion, are upset with Johnson.
      • Their grievances stem from Johnson’s handling of votes related to foreign aid for Ukraine, particularly without U.S. border security provisions attached.

    Gosar’s Statement:

      • Rep. Gosar emphasized the need for a speaker who prioritizes America’s interests over external pressures.
      • He also criticized Johnson for bending to the demands of “warmongers, neo-cons, and the military-industrial complex.”

    Democrats’ Role:

      • If all Democrats vote against Johnson, the three Republican votes would also be sufficient to remove him as speaker.
      • Some Democrats have indicated they may step in to save Johnson, but Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-N.Y.) clarified that foreign aid bills must pass “in totality” for any conversation about saving Johnson.

    Potential Outcomes:

      • Johnson’s position is now precarious, and the addition of a third Republican also supporting the motion increases the likelihood of his removal.
      • Democrats’ decision could further impact Johnson’s fate within the conference.

    Massie’s Intentions:

      • Rep. Massie’s intention is not to force a vote but to demonstrate their numbers and encourage Johnson to resign voluntarily.
      • This approach would avoid chaotic floor proceedings and also allow Republicans to choose a new leader behind closed doors.

As the drama unfolds, Johnson’s future as speaker hangs in the balance, with both Republicans and Democrats closely watching the outcome.
