    International Transgender Day of Visibility is March 31 - Utilities Kingston

    On Trans Day of Visibility, which is celebrated annually on March 31, we honor the extraordinary courage and contributions of transgender Americans.

    History and Origins

    • Transgender Day of Visibility (TDOV) was created by Rachel Crandall-Crocker in 2009.
    • Crandall-Crocker wanted a day to celebrate the living, in contrast to the somber Transgender Day of Remembrance (TDOR). That honors transgender homicide victims.
    • TDOR, born out of the tragic murder of Rita Hester in 1998. It is also a solemn occasion to remember those lost.
    • TDOV, on the other hand, aims to celebrate transgender people worldwide. And also provide a moment of happiness.

    Why March 31?

    • The date for TDOV, March 31, was chosen because it falls between TDOR in November and Pride Month in June.
    • It provides a distinct opportunity to recognize. And also uplift transgender individuals.

    Celebrations and Visibility

    • Millions of people worldwide now recognize March 31. As a day to celebrate transgender resilience and joy.
    • Major buildings and landmarks light up in pink, white, and light blue. The transgender pride colors.
    • Community gatherings, panels, and celebrations take place globally.

    Colors Flown

    • On TDOV, the transgender pride flag is prominently flown to symbolize. Visibility, acceptance, and also celebration.

      • The Honourable Marci Ien, Minister for Women and also Gender Equality and Youth. Also emphasizes diversity as Canada’s strength.

    Government of Canada’s Commitment:

      • The Government of Canada remains steadfast in its stance: trans women are women, trans men are men. They stand against hate in all its forms, both in-person and also online.
      • The day serves as an opportunity to honor the resilience and unbreakable spirit of transgender, Two-Spirit. And non-binary people, also celebrating their diversity and contributions.
      • The Federal 2SLGBTQI+ Action Plan addresses and prevents discrimination and also stigma based on sexual orientation, sex characteristics, gender identity. It aims to create a safer. And more inclusive environment for future generations.
