A video recording gone viral has revealed that Kwesi Ahwoi, a senior and influential member of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) recently suggested that the fate of unexpected death which befell Professor Atta Mills while in office as President of Ghana may happen to John Mahama if he wins the next presidential election therefore his running mate should be ever ready to take over as President.

The said video captured Kwesi Ahwoi saying: “…was not prepared to be President at that time but nature schemed things in such a way that President Mills had to give way to John Mahama.”

He continued: “Anything can happen so Naana be every prepped like your motto say, be ready. Anything can happen and you can become the President of the Republic of Ghana”, Kwesi Ahwoi told the NDC’s 202 running mate, Prof. Naana Opoku-Agyemang as part of a toast he gave in her honour.

The event was at a party time gathering of NDC big names at the residence of the Ahwois to celebrate Prof. Opoku-Agyemang selection as running mate to John Mahama.

Prof. Jane Opoku-Agyemang, dressed in an all-white-attire was captured in same video paying attention to what was being suggested to her

The comments by Kwesi Ahwoi that “anything can happen” to John Mahama in office as President therefore his running mate should be ever ready has generated some uproar within the NDC, especially among persons who have interpreted the statements as a death wish.

One of such persons within the NDC offended by the comments of Mr. Ahwoi is the party’s former executive member, Samuel Koku Anyidoho who took to his X page (formerly Twitter) to write:

“Listen to this extremely revealing & disturbing statement by the Ahwois when they gathered to celebrate their triumph in getting their puppet to become JMs Running Mate. He says JM was NOT ready to be Prez. Oyiwa! They also gloated in Prez Mills’ death. We shall know the truth

“Nature “schemed things” for Prez Mills to be eliminated huh? People should be “ever prepared” for a State Inquest into the death of President Atta-Mills. We shall surely get to the bottom of the matter because God is about to SPEAK

“They know what happened, that’s why they have never been bothered about keeping high the legacy of the late President Atta-Mills & hate me with a passion for keeping the late President alive in the minds of Ghana & the world. God shall surely fight my battles for me” Mr. Anyidoho posted moments after the statement by Mr. Ahwoi went viral.

John Evan Atta-Mills died on  July 24, 2012 at the 37 Military Hospital in Accra while he was still President of Ghana and his vice, President, John Mahama was sworn into office by Parliament to become President the same day.

12 years after that incident, the circumstances which lead to the death and exact cause of death have both remained an unsolved controversy albeit a sensitive one.

In January this year, family of the late former President appealed to President Akufo-Addo to assist them in retrieving the autopsy report that was carried to know the exact cause of death.

“Since I was enstooled as the Queenmother, I have not seen any autopsy report in the hands of the family. It is a very difficult situation that the family and I have. We are unable to explain to anyone the actual cause of death of the former President because we do not have the official autopsy report”, Nana Enyimfua III, Kyedomhem of Ekumfi Asaman told President Akufo-Addo during a courtesy call to his Office.

Nana Enyimfua III continued: “It is only right that we know exactly what the doctor found as the cause of his death. To this end, I wish to plead with your government for and on behalf of my entire family, to assist us in securing the autopsy report.

“If the autopsy report is obtained, it will go a long way to put the family’s continued confusion on the cause of death of the late Atta Mills to rest and the future generations of our family will have a source document to use in explaining to their children of the real cause of death of the former President.”
