    Trotro Driver Kills 21 …Through Careless Overtaking In Ashanti

    The Ghana Police Service has disclosed that the carelessness of a commercial passenger mini-bus driver identified as Yaw Egyiri has caused the death of some twenty-one (21) passengers and injured many more travelling on the Kumasi-Accra highway last Friday March 15.

    The Ghana Police Service has disclosed that the carelessness of a commercial passenger mini-bus driver identified as Yaw Egyiri has caused the death of some twenty-one (21) passengers and injured many more travelling on the Kumasi-Accra highway last Friday March 15.

    The careless driver, Yaw Egyiri, himself did not survive when his carelessness lead to a collision between a Ford Transit Mini Bus  he was driving and a VW Sprinter Bus

    The driver of the Ford Transit Mini Bus, identified as Yaw Egyiri, who was from the Kumasi direction, according to a statement issued by the Police Service reportedly did a wrong overtaking and in the process veered his speeding vehicle into the other lane.

    “Preliminary investigation indicates that suspect driver Yaw Egyiri (deceased) was driving a Ford Transit Mini Bus with registration number GR 6279-24 from Konongo towards Accra with passengers on board.

    “On reaching a section of the road at Pra-River Junction area along Juaso – Nkawkaw motor road, he carelessly overtook some vehicles and collided head-on with an oncoming VW Sprinter Bus with registration No. AS 4483-23 driven by a suspect driver yet to be identified and also deceased, with passengers onboard ”, the Police statement noted.

    The driver of the VW Sprinter Bus, from the opposite direction, who perhaps did not see the Ford Transit Mini Bus on time, rammed his vehicle into it (Ford), leading to 14 deaths on the spot and seven other deaths later on.

    A police statement, which confirmed the gory accident, said both drivers died during the accident, noting that Yaw Egyiri’s wrong overtaking caused the accident.

    According to the police, said “the dead bodies have been deposited at the Stewards Hospital mortuary at Yawkwei, Konongo Municipal Hospital mortuary and Juaso Government Hospital mortuary for identification, preservation and autopsy.

    “The surviving victims are currently receiving medical attention at the Juaso Government Hospital, Stewards Hospital at Yawkwei, Konongo Municipal Hospital and Asante Akim Agogo Presbyterian Hospital”.
