After spending time in the academy at Norwich City, he played for non-league club Eastbourne Town (21 games, 4 goals) before moving to St. Leonards. He later coached the West Florida Fury in the United States and returned to England to play for Wisbech Town.
- Football Career: After retiring as a player, Ashworth remained involved in football. Subsequently, he became the center of excellence director at Cambridge United until March 2004.
