Alexei Navalny was born on June 4, 1976, in Butyn, Russia. His father was a Soviet army officer, and also his mother was an economist. Navalny grew up in various garrison towns in the Moscow area. But he spent summers with his paternal grandmother in the countryside near Chernobyl, Ukraine.
Navalny attended the Peoples’ Friendship University of Russia in Moscow, and he graduated with a law degree in 1998. He remained in Moscow to practice law and also to continue his studies. And also in 2001 he earned an economics degree from the Financial University under the Government of the Russian Federation.
In the early days of Putin’s reign, it seemed that opposition groups might hold some sway in the State Duma, but the unification of pro-Putin parties under the banner of United Russia in 2001 would stifle much dissent.
