The National Democratic Congress (NDC) flagbearer, John Dramani Mahama, has expressed profound sadness when comparing the mining town of Obuasi with Johannesburg, the capital of South Africa.
He emphasized that the profits from mineral mining have made a substantial contribution to Johannesburg’s development in South Africa. This stands in stark contrast to Obuasi’s lackluster state, which he feels lacks notable accomplishments.
He pointed out that while mining communities are generally doing well around the world, this is regrettably not the case in Ghana. He promises to give these areas top priority and concentrate on their advancement during his next term.
Speaking to the Obuasi people, chiefs, and elders, Mahama said “When you go to mining communities across the world, they are one of the best when it comes to development. These communities have been developed with the proceeds from the mines, but the same cannot be said about Ghana.
“Look at Obuasi. You cannot compare Obuasi to Johannesburg because Johannesburg is seeing all the development. So when we come to power, we will work with Nananom in order to use some of the proceeds to develop Obuasi so that in the near future.”
“When the gold is finished, we can also say Obuasi benefited from the gold in there,” he noted.
Relatedly, Mahama has declared that he will prioritize addressing youth unemployment.
He stated that an apprenticeship policy aimed at addressing unemployment will be introduced by the upcoming NDC administration.
He clarified that the local Assemblies would carry out the initiative and assist artisans in interacting with and hiring youth.
While on the “Building Ghana We Want Tour” in the Ashanti Region, the NDC flagbearer spoke to the residents of New Edubiase and outlined plans to address youth unemployment should he be elected in 2024.
John Mahama has urged the NPP government to make prudent use of the most recent IMF bailout.
