In the event that he wins the general elections in 2024, National Democratic Congress (NDC) flagbearer John Dramani Mahama has declared that he will prioritize addressing youth unemployment.
He stated that an apprenticeship policy aimed at addressing unemployment will be introduced by the upcoming NDC administration.
He clarified that the local Assemblies would carry out the initiative and assist artisans in interacting with and hiring youth.
While on the “Building Ghana We Want Tour” in the Ashanti Region, the NDC flagbearer spoke to the residents of New Edubiase and outlined plans to address youth unemployment should he be elected in 2024.
“For individuals outside the school system, our emphasis is on skill enhancement, enabling them to explore opportunities in hairdressing, seamstressing, and other artisanal crafts. The next NDC government aims to establish a National Apprenticeship Program, with District Assemblies leading the implementation. They will oversee the registration of artisanal business owners and attach the young people with them. Local Assemblies will allocate funding to mentors who will guide these young individuals,” Mr. Mahama promised.
John Mahama has urged the NPP government to make prudent use of the most recent IMF bailout.
Mahama emphasized the difficulties Ghanaians face in the economy. He expressed disapproval towards the Akufo-Addo-Bawumia administration, implying that the people’s misery would endure for as long as they held political power. In particular, he discussed the government’s decision to impose Value Added Tax (VAT) on electricity consumption, foreseeing a nearly 21% rise in tariffs that would further burden citizens with mounting expenses.
He urged the departing administration to utilize the IMF funds and any further funding from the World Bank and other development partners with prudence and accountability.
Relatedly, the former president has urged Ghanaians not give up amid Ghana’s economic crisis.
In an effort to raise awareness of his proposed 24-hour economy policy, John Mahama led a large group of NDC executives and supporters on a walk on Wednesday, January 24.
