Following the release of a video on the internet showing National Democratic Congress (NDC) members taking a serious oath, there was a strong outcry from the public regarding the ceremony’s nature.

In the video, a well-known party member named Elvis Afriyie Ankrah is seen giving the oath, which calls for members to swear to die with their firstborn children if they betray the party.

Ankrah is seen in the video supervising the ceremony with a white cloth spread out on the ground while wearing a white kaftan. Holding a long, shiny sword, participants stand on the white cloth in front of him and alternately recite the oath in a solemn manner.

In the upcoming elections, the party has promised not to let personal gain override the party’s interests. If they were to break this vow, there would be serious repercussions.

As the oath comes to an end, participants say, “As I hold this sword, I swear that if I compromise and sell out my party in exchange for money in the next election, may I die and my first child also die, so help me God.”

The purpose of this ceremonial swearing is still unknown, though some people characterize it as occult. The publicly denounced event was apparently videotaped with the organizers’ knowledge and then made public online, sparking a flurry of responses.

As the NDC gets ready for the elections on December 7, some claim that these actions compromise democracy and cast doubt on the party’s honesty and moral character.

The NDC, which is attempting to take back control from the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) after losing in 2016 and failing to win in 2020, is currently dealing with heightened scrutiny and internal conflict as a result of the contentious release of the video.

It is anticipated that officials and party leaders will address the matter and provide clarification regarding the events leading up to the oath-taking ceremony.
