Labor unions are reaffirming their pledge to offer relief and flexibility to the incoming administration—but only if certain requirements are met.
They maintain that the political party can only secure this kind of support if it budgets its expenses sensibly and stays away from wasteful spending.
In the event that he were to regain power, National Democratic Congress (NDC) flagbearer John Dramani Mahama has asked Ghanaians, particularly trade and labor organizations, for a “honeymoon” period.
The ND) flagbearer stressed the need for time to boost the economy before addressing specific demands during a speech at a Hohoe “Campus Connect” event.
“And you will realize the harm that the NPP administration has done to Ghana’s economy. This country is broke, and so we will beg you that when we come into office give us a bit of a honeymoon, let’s put things in place so that we bring the economy back onto its feet.”
During his “Building Ghana” tour through the Volta Region, Mr. Mahama made this appeal.
The President of the University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG) – UG Chapter has set a requirement in response to the appeal made by former President John Mahama.
According to Prof. Ransford Gyampo, the association won’t even consider granting Mahama this time frame unless he shows a sincere desire to reduce government spending.
He is his hope for the upcoming administration, “wouldn’t be seen or be heard talking, telling labour to tighten their belt while you and your appointees will be living in opulence, as we keep seeing now.
“So what is going to be the size of the government? Are they going to be selling vehicles that may be bequeathed to them by the current administration? I mean, if some of these things are done, we will not get the support from labour.”
Felix Kwakye Ofosu, Mr. Mahama’s spokesperson, gave an assurance that the former President is prepared to control spending if given the go-ahead.
