Personal life
Driven by curiosity and a love for learning, MatPat was a top student throughout his school years. He served as valedictorian of his high school and also earned an academic scholarship to Duke University, where he pursued a double major in theater and neuroscience.
While academics came naturally, MatPat’s heart belonged to the stage. He actively participated in school plays and honed his acting skills, dreaming of a career in theater. His fascination with human psychology, fueled by his neuroscience studies, also played a crucial role in shaping his future endeavors.
New York Dreams:
Following graduation, MatPat, armed with his academic accomplishments and artistic aspirations, set his sights on Broadway. He moved to New York City, ready to take the theater world by storm. However, reality proved harsher than his dreams. Despite his talent and dedication, navigating the competitive world of New York theater proved challenging.
Facing unemployment and the disillusionment of a struggling actor’s life, MatPat needed a new path. In 2011, seeking an outlet for his creativity and knowledge, he also turned to YouTube. Inspired by Extra Credits’ episode on “Tangential Learning,” he uploaded the first episode of “Game Theory,” analyzing the lore and science behind video games.
