    Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the vice president, has expressed sadness over the death of popular Accra waakye seller Auntie Muni.

    The family reports that Auntie Muni passed away on Wednesday, January 3, 2023, at the University of Ghana Medical Centre (UGMC) in Accra, following a brief illness.

    “Mummy was sick, she was complaining of pain, so we took her to the SNNIT Hospital…., there was complications, so she asked that they discharge her.

    “When they discharged her, after two days, we realised she was still not feeling well, so we rushed her to the University of Ghana Medical Centre for medical attention and this morning at 3am she passed away,” Arafat disclosed.

    Speaking to the aforementioned media outlet, a son of popular Accra waakye seller Arafat stated that she will be buried in Tamale today, Wednesday, January 3, in accordance with Islamic custom.

    Vice President, Dr. Bawumia took to his Facebook to write, “Indeed, we belong to Allah, and indeed, to Him, we return. I received the news of the death, this morning, of Aunty Muni, our nation’s famous Waakye seller. My condolences to her family. May Allah forgive her shortcomings and grant her Jannah.”

    Prior to this, on Thursday, November 19, 2020, Dr. Bawumia purchased waakye from Aunti Muni during the nation’s introduction of the QR Code system, which is part of Ghana’s effort to become a cashless society that includes the unofficial sector.

    Ghanaians on social media have flooded X (formerly Twitter) with tributes for the popular Accra waakye seller following her demise.

    Meanwhile, a considerable number of mournful Muslims gathered at the Cantonments Police Mosque to bid a heartfelt farewell to the late Auntie Muni.

    Her mortal remains have been dispatched to the airport, where she will be flown to Tamale, for the funeral rites and burial.

    Auntie Muni was a beloved figure, and her waakye was enjoyed by people from all walks of life, including former President Mahama, who was known to enjoy her waakye every Sunday.
