Just hours after the European Court of Justice declared that UEFA and FIFA had broken EU law by blocking the league’s creation, UEFA President Aleksander Ceferin made fun of the “fantastic” Super League on Thursday.
The European Union court declared that FIFA and UEFA had abused their power to threaten and punish the 12 clubs that had suggested creating a separate European league, forcing nine of them to back out.
Later, Juventus withdrew, leaving Real Madrid and Barcelona as the league’s sole supporters.
“We will not try to stop them. They can create whatever they want,” Ceferin told a virtual press conference. “I hope they start their fantastic competition as soon as possible, with two clubs.
“I hope they know what they are doing but I’m not so sure about that. Football is not for sale, we have shown that many times,” UEFA President Aleksander Ceferin added.
Senior officials such as Pedro Proenca, President of European Leagues, Javier Tebas, President of La Liga, and Nasser Al-Khelaifi, President of Paris St. Germain and the European Club Association, joined Ceferin on the call.
Meanwhile, the idea of creating a new competition by some powerhouse European clubs is gradually turning into a heavy shambles as top teams reject joining the European super league.
Earlier on, the European Court of Justice verdict gave hope to the revival of the European Super League following the court ruling which prevented the two major football governing bodies, FIFA and UEFA from banning clubs who wished to join the super league.
Some top European clubs have released a press statement rejecting the super league and pledging their unwavering support and commitment to remaining under UEFA and fully participating in the UEFA organized club competitions, thus UEFA Champions League, UEFA Europa League, UEFA Conference League and UEFA Super Cup.
However, the European super league main founders, Real Madrid and Barcelona are more determined to breakaway from UEFA and form their own competition and have total control over their destinies.
