Sam George, the Ningo-Prampram member of parliament, has stated that passing the contentious anti-LGBTQ bill would be the “best thing to happen to Ghana.”

The lawmaker made it clear in an interview with Bola Ray on Starr Chat that he is more worried about the perceived imposition of such practices on Ghanaian youth than he is about what people do in their bedrooms.

He maintained that the goal of the bill is to safeguard personal privacy and family values.

“When the bill is passed and becomes law, if they say you’ve fallen foul of the bill, it is not because somebody thinks or infers incorrectly. The person has to take you to court and prove before a judge in a court of competent jurisdiction, meeting the ingredients of the law,” Mr. Sam George explained.

He emphasized that the bill also addresses assault, stating that offenders who verbally or physically abuse others may be sentenced to up to three years in prison. Mr. George asserts that the legislation is essential to preserving Ghana’s ideals.

“It will protect our family values; it protects us. For those who say, ‘Why is Sam George so interested in this bill?’ I am absolutely not interested in what you do in the privacy of your bedroom. It is not my business,” Sam George reiterated.

The MP went on to say that his primary worry is that people are bringing personal matters into Ghanaian classrooms, raising concerns about whether it is appropriate to expose young people to such topics in a learning environment.

“How can I pay fees for my child to go to school, then you go and bring the pervasion of your bedroom into the Ghanaian classrooms?” he queried.

The proposed legislation seeks to outlaw LGBTQ+ activity and related activities, make it illegal to advocate for or promote LGBTQ+ causes, and set up safeguards and support mechanisms for children and those who are impacted by, or accused of participating in, LGBTQ+ activity.

Ghanaians are deeply divided over the contentious LGBT bill; supporters see it as a safeguard for traditional values, while opponents claim it violates people’s rights. The bill’s parliamentary proceedings continue to garner a lot of interest and conversation.
